The 1999 redesign introduced HYPER VTEC, which runs the engine on two valves per cylinder at low revs and switches to all four above about 6,750 rpm. The chassis got a shorter wheelbase, a lower engine mount and sportier 17-inch radial tyres, and the bike lost around 6 kg. The 2002 SPEC II update lowered the VTEC switch point, added an LCD odometer/clock and the HISS immobiliser.
